On-site volunteering to resume at Somer’s Garden

Former Orange Park Mayor, Connie Thomas, a long-time supporter of Northeast Florida’s

first publicly accessible food first garden, Somer’s Garden, will be sponsoring a

July 25th, 2020 maintenance event from 10am to noon.

Orange Park, FL, 07/14/20 – 1152 Gano Avenue in Orange Park, Florida - Somer’s Garden

On July 25th, from 10am to noon, Connie For Clay is sponsoring the first monthly maintenance day at Somer’s Garden since the Covid 19 quarantine began.

The public is encouraged to bring their gloves, masks and energy to join us, as we tend to “a community food forest that brings life, nourishment, new memories and a positive focus to a piece of property that otherwise evokes so much pain.” - Tina Harden Co-founder BFFTNEF

Volunteers will be mowing, weeding and spreading mulch, while adhering to social distancing standards, in an effort to cut back the unfettered growth that took place through the pandemic shutdown. Garden designer, and Permaculture specialist, Candice Crawford of Jacksonville will be on-site to answer questions about permaculture and the origins of this eventually self sustaining garden.

As many in Orange Park and beyond know, the garden is a living memorial to seven-year-old Somer Thompson, whose life was tragically ended on the property.

Volunteers will also be able to speak with former Orange Park Mayor Connie Thomas, as she will be there volunteering with some of her Connie For Clay team. “Somer’s Garden so beautifully illustrates how we can find and build community in the midst of horrific tragedy. It also provides the perfect outlet for everyone’s pent-up enthusiasm to help out in some way by getting the garden ready for a new season of growth. While you’re there, come talk to me. I want to hear what changes you’d like to see in our corner of Clay County.” - Connie Thomas, candidate for Clay County Commissioner of District 3.
